But when you are living paycheck to paycheck and juggling bills due dates, these painful penalties may feel unavoidable.

• Understand your Deadlines: To make sure you don´t accidentally forget a payment, write the bill´s due date on the envelope. Sign up for a service like Quicken online or Google´s calendar feature, which will send you free bill due reminders via email or text message.

Payments may take a few days to process and, if posted after a certain time of the day, may not be credited until the next day. To avoid this, ask your company all the information you need on how they process the payment.
